Dear all:
FAPA organized a congressional staff briefing on a U.S.-Taiwan free trade agreement this morning (4/28 Wed), cosponsored by the Institute for International Development Studies and the NATPA. We have the honor of having three House of Representatives attend this event and speak out for an FTA with Taiwan. They are Ranking Member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Armed Services Committee member Rep. Robert Andrews (D-NJ) and Taiwan Caucus member Rep. Scott Garrett (R-NJ). FAPA President and Vice President, Drs. Bob Yang and Mark Kao took the time to join us. The event was well-attended by over forty congressional staffers and the press, including Congressional Quarterly, one of the most influential publications on Capitol Hill, and Washington Trade Daily.
When we met with Rep. Ros-Lehtinen's key foreign policy advisor about this event, we equated ECFA with a "Trojan Horse" that will wreck havoc Taiwan's economy and harm the interests of the people of Taiwan. Much to our delight, Congresswoman Ros-Lehtinen used that metaphor in her remarks. Rep. Andrews also took a page from our talking points and expressed his worries that "ECFA will have Taiwan 'caged' within China's burgeoning economic clout."
Below are the remarks from Congresswoman Ros-Lehtinen and press statement from Rep. Scott Garrett.
Regards, Iris
